Biography
The 5th district needs a commissioner with experience and vision. David Lynn is uniquely qualified for our county commission seat: he has relevant experience in both business and government, as well as a solid record in community activism. He is a proven community leader who can listen and work effectively with neighborhoods, business leaders and government staff.

David believes strongly in protecting neighborhoods, maintaining the exceptional quality of life in Athens, protecting our natural resources and greenspace, and improving the public's influence on the governing process. As commissioner, David will work for adherence to the Land Use Plan and Guiding Principles; for expanding transportation choices; for improving the enforcement of zoning laws; and for an economic development strategy that maximizes our community as a center for research, education, biotechnology, and the arts -- without sacrificing the things that have always made Athens special.

David Lynn is a geographer with the University of Georgia's Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS), where he specializes in computer technology and geographic information systems. He is 40 years old and has been married for 14 years to Myra Moore, an instructor with UGA's Terry College of Business. David and Myra are residents of the Cobbham neighborhood .

David first came to Athens 22 years ago as a college student, earning a Bachelor's degree in Political science while working as an intern to Athens Mayor Dwain Chambers. After receiving a Master's degree in Public Administration from UGA, David joined the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department's Long-Range Planning Division. During five years as a city planner, David gained valuable experience in transit, transportation planning, and zoning and development policy.

Professional opportunities drew David and Myra to Fort Worth, Texas, where David worked in the private sector as a vice president for the Buxton Company, a retail site selection firm. Here, he brought the use of geographic information systems to commercial real estate and market research, gaining an understanding of economic development from the commercial perspective and working with retailers to find the most productive new markets.

David and Myra returned to Athens at their first opportunity four years later, where David began a career at ITOS. David specializes in the application of computer technology to help local governments throughout the State of Georgia improve the delivery of services to their citizens.

In 1999, David became co-chair of Citizens for Healthy Neighborhoods, a coalition of several active in-town neighborhood associations. In that capacity he led neighborhood negotiations with Athens Regional Medical Center, resulting in a widely praised growth plan that is regarded as a model of citizen and institutional cooperation for communities throughout Georgia.

David and Myra continue to be active in the Cobbham Neighborhood Association and in Citizens for Healthy Neighborhoods. They have also served as active supporters and volunteers for Community Connection (where Myra is a board member), the Athens Land Trust, the Democratic Party, the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Georgia Museum of Art.
